Betty Jean Cowart Pitman of Horn Lake, Mississippi passed away on December 16, 2023. She was born August 28, 1934 in Winnsboro, Louisiana to Theodore Buckley Cowart and Eva Lenmore Nielsen Cowart. Betty was preceded in death by her three brothers, James Cowart, Jerry Cowart, Billy Cowart, sister, Patsy Cowart and her husband of 71 years, J.L. Pitman, Jr.
Betty was a gracious hostess and loved entertaining her family and friends. She was affectionately known as “Bebby”, loved being in her kitchen and was most noted for her love of country cooking. She also loved gardening, and she played the piano at Berea Baptist Church for over forty years until her declining health prevented her from doing so.
Betty is survived by her three children Tom Pitman of Memphis, TN, Rita Pitman Vogt of Horn Lake, MS and Kenny (Patti) Pitman of Brentwood, TN, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, sister Barbara (Jack) Newton of Metairie, Louisiana and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private family graveside service will be held on
Thursday, December 21 at 11:00AM
at New Bethlehem Cemetery in Horn Lake.
The Pitman family wishes to thank the nurses and aides at Landmark Nursing Home of Desoto— specifically Nurse Lisa, Nurse Cozetta and Betty Jean— for their loving care and compassion. Additionally the family thanks Berea Baptist Church for their outpouring of love, kindness and support over the years.
