Sebastian Clayton Francis Jr.

INDIAN ISLAND—SC Francis Jr, 64, died November 16, 2016 at a Bangor hospital. He was born November 24, 1951 in Charleston, SC a son of Sebastian Sr and Mary (Kelly) Francis

SC was many things to many people through out his life. He was a proud member of the Penobscot Nation and will be remembered for his practice of Native Traditions including drumming, singing, carvings, beading and art work. He was also proud of his service to his country as a United States Marine during the Vietnam era.

SC was a kind and tender man who taught many life lessons to many people. He shared his love of Native culture, his love of moose hunting and fishing, his passion for art and photography with those around him. Through his business, Penobscot Indian Arts, he gave opportunities to other artists in the community have have their works seen and sold. SC also had a tireless dedication in the daily care of his brother Paul Ray for the past 30 years. He was an active member of the Penobscot Indian Nation serving as a firefighter, a member of the land committee and our community Santa Claus for many years. At various cultural events, like the K-100, SC was behind the scenes ensuring that everyone had a hot cup of coffee and a warm meal.

SC felt a strong connection to the Penobscot River, every time he crossed it, he knew he was home.

SC is survived by his wife of 35 years Louise Cheryl (Phillips) Francis, children Amanda Francis and her partner Aaron Wilder, Eric Francis and his wife Eunice, Samantha Francis Craven and her husband Barret, step children Rae Armour, Joseph Knapp Jr and his wife Carla, James E. Francis Sr and his companion Jennifer Neptune, and Renee Francis and her companion Owen Wimble; 16 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; brothers Paul Ray Francis, Michael Dufour, Jerry Francis; sisters Mary Goodale, Pam Bosshart and her husband Kevin; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, a daughter Amy Rose Francis, brother Anthony Dufour, brother-in-law Robert Goodale, and his pup of 20 years Gizmo.

A ceremonial celebration of his life will be conducted 1PM Saturday at the Penobscot Community Building, Indian Island. Burial with military honors will follow at Tribal Cemetery Indian Island.
