OLD TOWN - Michael W. Cates, 73, passed away peacefully February 2, 2016, with his family by his side. Michael was born in Old Town, Maine, May 10, 1942 the son of Clair and Adeline (Michaud) Cates. Michael grew up in Old Town and held various jobs in the area upon graduating high school. He worked as a hand sewer for several years at local shoe shops, until he found his lifelong career in construction and heavy equipment operator. He was a jack of all trades and a master of many, who built his house at Pushaw Lake from the foundation up. He was a natural outdoorsman, who loved fishing and hunting. He always looked forward to his annual spring fishing trips, with Scott, Brent, and his father Clair, to Great Works Stream which always resulted in two things; a big trout feed and a stuck Jeep. Mike's real passion was deer hunting though. He was a crack shot with his model 94 and always looked forward to going to hunting camp in Bradley during Thanksgiving week with his Uncle Albert Michaud, his father, his boys, and his cousins. Michael is survived by his son Scott and wife Laurie, son Brent and his wife Laurie; a brother David Cates and his partner Ed Hassett, a sister Belinda Cates and partner Patsy McCannell; stepdaughters, Lisa and Rhonda Smart; grandchildren Nathan, Nicholas, and Kristin Cates, Rachel Smart, and Brittney Vinson; great-grandchildren Eviana, Kolton, Kylie, Gunnison, and a very special friend, Joyce Bates.
