Edna Geneva Lucas

Edna G. (Dunn) Lucas, 89, of Old Town went to be with the Lord on January 29, 2014, with her children very close by, while residing at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor, where she received exceptional care for the past 8 years.

She was born in Milford, on May 30, 1924, daughter of Harris L. Dunn, Sr., and Gertrude Adeline (Tremblay) Dunn. She attended Milford Grammar School and graduated from Old Town High School, class of 1942. Edna worked at Woolworth’s in Bangor upon graduation and wanted to attend beauty school, but the school closed down during WWII due to lack of supplies.

On August 3, 1946, she married the love of her life; Charles E. Lucas, Sr. of Orono. Together they made their home in Old Town for many years. Edna and Charlie worked together for a time at Penobscot Shoe Company, only after her children were in school full time. She was active in scouting and was a girl scout leader as well as Den Mother for the cub scouts. She was very active in the PTO. She was very active in the VFW Ladies Auxillary, Post 3381 in Old Town and held many offices in that organization including President for the State of Maine for a year. She participated on numerous committees during that time. She and Charlie made numerous good friends in the VFW along the way and traveled to a few National Conventions. She stayed active in the VFW up until age 80.

She worked for ten years at EMMC in the domestic engineering department and formed many good friendships. She had a beautiful smile and was genuinely interested in people and their lives.

She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, at each other’s homes on Saturday nights, crocheting, swimming at the OT pool and spending time with children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Old Town Senior Citizens and enjoyed the activities and the friendships.

She belonged to St. Mary’s Parish in OT her whole life and was a CCD teacher for a number of years.

She was an avid Red Sox Fan and passed along that trait to her children and grandchildren.

She cherished time with her many sisters in law and brothers in law over the years.

Edna is survived by her younger brother, Harris Llewelyn Dunn, Jr. of Old Town.

She is survived by her daughter Harriet Garnett and her husband Joe, of Houlton; her son, Charles E. Lucas, Jr. and his wife, Fran, of St. Petersburg, FL; her daughter Trudy Fogg and husband Dean, of Enfield and her daughter Rose Provost and husband Jim of Norwood, MA. She will be sadly missed by all.

Edna was blessed with and survived by seven grandchildren. They include:

Robyn (Longtin) Daley of Johnson, VT; Amanda (Lucas) Waltz and husband Robert of Lunenburg, MA, Alisa (Lucas) McLaughlin and husband John of Bettendorf, IA; Tracy (Fogg) Pratt and husband Alex of Falmouth, ME, Diana (Fogg) Picavet and husband Scott of Raymond, Melanie (Provost) Darcy and husband Paul of Norwood, MA and Lucas Provost and wife Heather of Albion.

Edna was lucky enough to have 16 great grandchildren, they include: Michael, Aydan, Julia-Rose, Elizabeth of Vermont; Charlie and Bradley of Lunenburg, MA, Max of Bettendorf, IA; Jacob and Gwen of Falmouth, ME, Brady and James (twins) of Raymond, Jack and Alyssa of Norwood, MA and Madalyn, Ryder and Miles (twins) of Albion.

She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Charlie, her brother, Philip Dunn and sister-in-law Lorraine (Cox) Dunn. She is survived by three brothers-in-law, Bernard, Frank and Kenneth Lucas; and eight sisters-in-law Bernice Gibbons, Thelma Nevells, Gertrude Nevells, Phyllis Adams and May-Theresa Ranco. Leatha Lucas, Verla Lucas and Ruth-Ann Lucas. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Edna will be sadly missed by her roommate of a few years, Irene.

Friends may call 4-7 PM Saturday at the Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town where a funeral service will be conducted 1PM Sunday. Spring interment will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Edna’s memory to the Activity Fund of the Maine Veteran’s Home 44 Hogan Road Bangor, ME 04401. Edna enjoyed many outings with the residents and staff of the Maine Veteran’s Home over the years. The family would like to thank the staff of the Maine Veteran’s Home that cared for our mother in such a compassionate and loving manner on both the E and D units.
