OLD TOWN. Barbara Ann Roy passed away on December 11, 2022 peacefully surrounded by her family's love. She was born on November 22, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts to Lewis and Josephine Hacsunda. Barbara lost her parents at an early age and was raised by her maternal grandparants, Thomas and Rose LeTorney, who immigrated from Lebanon in the early 1900's. They lived near Fenway Park for a while and her grandfather would take her to Red Sox games. She remained a devoted Red Sox fan her entire life. In 1952 she graduated from Newton High School. In 1955 she moved to New Jersey and in 1958 she went on a blind date with Nelson Roy on Valentine's Day whom she married on June 28 that year. They enjoyed 59 years together until his passing in 2017. For ten years Barbara was a military wife until Nelson's retirement when they settled in his hometown of Old Town, Maine and raised five children. The family had a camp on Pushaw Lake and they spent many summers enjoying swimming, fishing, and boating on the lake. Barbara was an active swimmer and loved the water. Many wonderful memories and lasting friendships were formed with other families in the area. Upon Nelson’s retirement in 1992 the camp was razed and a new home was built. They lived on the lake until declining health brought them closer to town. Barbara loved to cook, providing good meals (some of them from her Lebanese heritage) to her family. She was always busy doing projects around the house and yard, especially her beautiful flower beds and vegetable garden. She loved and was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She always had hugs for everyone.
She is survived by her children David (Lisa), Caren, Carol (Rick), Debra (Bill), and Jean (Mark); grandchildren Meleah (Cody), Cameron, Drew, Emily, and Alexa; great-granddaughter Hannah; brother Richard Hacsunda (Josie); and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Nelson, parents and brother Thomas Hacsunda.
The family would like to acknowledge the loving care and support of Barbara during her last years of life by the staff of Woodlands, Maine Veterans Homes, and Kindred Hospice. A memorial service and burial will be held in the spring.
