

Dr. Harry B Neilsen of Old Lyme passed away January 31, 2016. He was born on April 26, 1921, the son of the late Charles E and Mildred B Neilsen of Westport Ct, and Old Lyme. He graduated from Tuffs Dental School in 1943. He served his country during WWII as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps in The Philippines, New Guinea, and the occupation of Japan. After the war, he opened a dental office in Darien CT and had his practice there for 33 years. In 1979 he and his wife Shirley M Neilsen retired to Old Lyme. In retirement he became an avid painter and was active in The New London Maritime Society.
Dr. Neilsen avidly pursued intertwined interests in US history, and researching his family’s genealogy. For a number of years he led tour groups to a number of American cities, blending sightseeing with the history of each city.
He is survived by his son William Neilsen and his wife Kathy and their two children Emily and Benjamin of Burlington VT. He is also survived by his son Eric Neilsen and his wife Barbara of Old Saybrook, their four children, Christopher of Brooklyn, NY, Cara of Waterford, CT, Steven of Norwich, CT and Charles, his wife Holly, and their son Daniel of Niantic, CT. He also leaves his brother Gale “Peter” Neilsen and his wife Ann of Old Lyme.
