Kathryn "Kathi" Tray Hill, a beloved mother, grandmother, partner, and friend, passed away on April 12, 2025 surrounded by love. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 32 years, Thomas W. “Dutch” Hill, with whom she built a life full of laughter, family, and beachside summers.
Born and raised in Narberth, Pennsylvania, Kathi was a walking ray of sunshine—radiant, joyful, and full of life. Her bright spirit touched everyone who knew her. She spent her career as a dedicated educator in the Philadelphia area, nurturing students with patience, compassion, and care.
Kathi met Dutch at the Bongo Room in Avalon, New Jersey, sparking a love story that lasted more than three decades. Together, they raised their children in Horsham, Pennsylvania, and spent magical summers at the Jersey Shore, where Kathi’s love of the ocean never faded.
After retirement, she moved to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, where she found deep joy in boogie boarding and hunting for shark’s teeth along the beach. She was especially grateful to share this special place with her grandchildren, who spent their summer breaks there with her.
Later in life, Kathi reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Skip Broom, and together they created a beautiful new chapter. She moved to Hadlyme, Connecticut, and through Skip and his children, she discovered the beauty of Fisher’s Island. Long evenings on the dock became treasured moments filled with laughter, unforgettable meals, and endless Perfect Manhattans.
Her sense of adventure extended far beyond the beach. She traveled extensively and took up photography as a hobby, an interest that led her to Cuba for a cultural exchange program that proved to be a life-changing experience. Every trip was an adventure as Kathi and Skip sought out the “road less traveled” and looked for truly unique experiences in every place they visited.
Kathi is survived by her loving children: son Justin Hill, and daughter Carlye Miller and her husband Matt. She was a deeply proud and doting Grandy to Trey (18) and Beckett (15) Miller, and Kai Hill (14). She is also survived by her brother, William Tray (Carol), her partner Skip Broom; his children Adrien Broom (Nico) and Margot Broom McClowry (Terry); and Skip’s grandchildren “T” and Cal—all of whom she welcomed with open arms and a full heart.
Kathi was a warrior in every sense. She faced cancer with unwavering grace, grit, and optimism. Her courage, humor, and open-heartedness during even the hardest days endeared her to all who walked that path alongside her.
She leaves behind family and friends across the country whose lives were brightened by her spirit. Her legacy is one of deep love, resilience, adventure, and joy. Kathi will be missed beyond measure and remembered always.
