Marilyn Faye (Smith) Atkins, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 9th, 2023. She was a devoted wife to David Atkins, and loving mother to Terri Fletcher and John Atkins, as well as grandmother to wonderful grandkids.
Marilyn was born November 11, 1947, the only child of her parents Fay Ethan Smith and Margaret Louise Smith. She was raised in the Shiloh Community of southern Montgomery County.
Marilyn graduated from Montgomery Central High School in Clarksville, TN where she met and began dating David during their sophomore year. They married in 1967 and moved to Nashville where David began his career at Antioch High School. They have lived in the Donelson/Old Hickory Community for their 56 years of married life together.
Marilyn loved her family. She spent most days enjoying the company of her children, and her grandchildren. She enjoyed going to watch the kids’ sporting events. Whether it was baseball, softball, football, soccer, lacrosse, dance competitions, or volleyball, she could always be found in the stands cheering them on.
Marilyn and David loved to travel. They frequently took Sunday afternoon drives and day trips just to “smell the roses.” She loved going to the beach to listen to the waves, but most importantly to eat fried oysters with a view.
Marilyn was a faithful member of Donelson Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she and David have attended since 1973. She often volunteered in Vacation Bible School, led the CPW women’s group, served on committees, enjoyed fellowship dinners, and was an active member of the Sunday School classes.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her father Fay; her mother Margaret; her beloved Aunt Dorothy and Uncle J.T. Britt; and her sisters-in-law Gail Atkins and Sue Atkins.
She is survived by husband, David, of 56 years; children Terri (Scott) and John (Brandi); grandchildren Austin (Krissy), Annaliese, Tanner, Jordin, and Finley; step-grandchildren Andrew and Taylor; brothers-in-law Bob, Billy, and Jack; sister-in-law Brenda.
There will be a visitation for Marilyn on Sunday November 12, from 4 pm until 7 pm at Hermitage Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens 535 Shute Lane, Old Hickory, TN and again on Monday from 1-2 pm with her Celebration of Life occurring at 2 pm in the Chapel. Burial will be in Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Donelson Cumberland Presbyterian Church as a designated offering to Team TN which is a ministry that supports volunteers to Beloved and Beyond, a camp for children with special needs.
