Frank was born on July 6, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Archie and Mary Ellen Burger. In his younger days, he modeled for various romance magazines and spent time in California going to college. He was in the United States Army in Iceland. Frank was employed by the United Paper Workers International in New York and moved to Nashville with the Union in 1981. Frank started the Employee Assistance Program for the UPWI – now USW – and was the Director until he retired. His work assisted thousands of people in the United States and Canada to receive the help they needed to become happy, productive employees and citizens. He is known as the Father of EAP programs
Frank was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, as well as a member of the Kiwanis Club, Veterans for Peace and The Peace and Justice Center. He was a storyteller, writer, a joker and a friend to everyone he met. His motto was, “Love and forgive one another.” Frank was a devoted husband, dad and grandpa.
In addition to his parents, Frank is preceded in death by two sisters, Rita Mackey and Mary Cullen, and beloved son, Brian Burger.
He is survived by wife, Carol Buchanan Burger; children, Kevin Burger and Christine Burger; step-children, Brian Alan Smith of Nashville and Doneen Karel Mills of Atlanta; grandchildren who adored their “Papa Sprite,” Chelsea Rierson, Jordan Mills, Shelbie Mills, Corey Roberts and Dustin Smith, and sister, Eileen Heacook of Bloomingdale, New Jersey.
Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm at Hermitage Funeral Home with the Celebration of Life Service following at 1:00 pm in the chapel with Pastor Kevin Martin officiating.
Interment will follow at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities in honor of Frank.
