BORN 3/10/1951 Detroit, MI
PASSED AWAY 10/19/2019 Nashville, TN
Diane passed away peacefully October 19th at Alive Hospice at 10 a. m. Diane had many challenges through the years but she always had a smile on her face and a positive attitude. Her faith never waivered.
At birth Diane was diagnosed as mentally retarded. At approximately 3 years she began having seizure's and was then diagnosed with epilepsy. She suffered for many years with sometimes multiple seizures a day. She was prescribed with every drug and sometimes multiple drugs with very little relief. In late 1993 VUMC neurology and epilepsy departments performed surgery on her brain to remove the areas that were causing the misfires. The surgery was a success which opened up a world of differences and possibilities for the first time in her life. Then in mid1994 Mom was having additional issues with her heart. They could not perform another bypass so they went in to her arteries to remove the plaque buildup. Part of the process was to thin her blood. Unbeknownst to the doctors she had an aneurism in her brain and due to the blood thinners she had a major bleed which left her in a vegetative state.
Moms death was world ending for Diane. I knew Dad would not be able to handle Diane alone. We bought a house in the old neighborhood.
Diane spent approximately 2 years in a rehabilitation program. Through that facility I began looking into possible residences that could accommodate her needs and allow her some independence. She had dreamed of living her life and making her own decisions.
Dad passed away in December 2003. In less than a year, Diane was moving into her very own apartment. She finally reached one of her dreams. She bloomed. She grew so much learning new things making a difference in her life and those that she came in contact with. And through it all her faith never never wavered. She would ride Access Ride every Sunday for services and Tuesday for Bible study. Her life was her own and she was happy with her life and her accomplishments. She could watch her favorite TV shows "I love Lucy", "Leave it to Beaver", "Andy Griffith", all the good old shows.
2019 has been an incredibly tough year. January 30th she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. We started treatment for cancer. February and March we were in and out of the hospital then to rehab and back to her apartment. Through it all she kept her positive attitude telling the doctors and nurses jokes. And through it all there was always that wonderful smile. She did everything the doctors and nurses asked of her until October 18th. She was back in the hospital and had already been there close to two weeks. In addition she had been in the hospital for 2 weeks and 1 week in rehab 3 weeks prior. A nurse came in and told her they would have to insert another catheter. As weak as she was she raised up in bed and said NO. She was moved to Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro that evening arriving at about 7:30. Diane passed away peacefully October 19th at Alive Hospice at 10 a. m.
