He was born in Knoxville, TN and was the son of Leonard Spencer and Ethel Vineyard Spencer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Margaret Spencer.
Gene was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville. He was ordained in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Gene had true passion for music. He was a longtime Minister of Music and Education and served many churches during the years of 1944 -1965. Those churches included, Fort Sanders, Gillespie Ave, FBC Highland Park, Cedar Creek, Eastwood, FBC Kingston, Euclid Ave Bristol and many, many others. In 1965, Charles found a church to call home, First Baptist Church, Old Hickory, where he served for 22 years until his retirement.
He leaves to forever cherish his memory; sons, Steve (Cherry) Spencer and Richard Spencer; grandchildren, Dr. Charles (Dr. Katherine) Spencer, Stephanie (Wade) Conway, Amanda (Robert) Tidwell, and Wesley (Britni) Spencer; great- grandchildren, Nora Kate Spencer, Tillman Spencer, Aubrey Conway, Aiden Conway, Olivia Tidwell and Amelia Tidwell; brother – in – law, Harold (Carol) Wright and host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Monday, April 22, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Hermitage Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be held immediately following visitation at 1:00 p.m. at Hermitage Funeral Home with Nephew, Dean Wright, officiating. Special Music by Patti Shields, Dean Wright and Amy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
