Anna Essig, formerly of Bethpage, passed away peacefully June 3, 2015 at the age of 87. She was married to her recently departed husband George for 60 Years. She is survived by her daughter Lynn Essig Engel, son-in-law Stephen Engel, son Christopher Essig, and daughter-in-law Doreen Essig. She was a devoted grandmother of 4 and great grandmother of 2.
Anna was born in Trenton but raised in Poland. She survived the turmoil of World War II with her mother Rose, father Walter and Sister Eugenia. She returned alone to America at the age of 19. She was a seamstress working in NYC on suits and coats and became part of the ILGWU. The family later moved to Long Island where she created bathing suits at Gelfo’s in Hicksville. She loved gardening and all types of crafts. She took great joy in cooking for the family and sharing recipes. She was always there to help her friends with creative tasks for their homes and children. She was a strong and loving mother who guided her children and others through life’s twists and turns.
George and Anna had a loving relationship which lasted over 60 years. Anna enjoyed dinners, trips and many other great adventures with her friends in the German Club.
An event celebrating her life will be held July 16 at Michael Hegarty Funeral Home 3377 US Highway 9, Old Bridge, NJ 08857 (732-679-4422). Visitation will start at 4:00 pm. The service will start around 5:00 pm. Visitation will complete at 6:30pm
The next morning at 10:30 am she will put to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery, 50 Jackson Avenue, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706 (914) 478-1855. Grave site is Lot No 225 Section 53. It is upfront by the main building.
