William Garland Young, 92, of Bucyrus, Kansas passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, November 20, 2021. He will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to everyone he knew.
“Bill” as he was known by his family and friends, was born on January 16, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri to Joseph Benjamin and Esther Serena Surrepta (Irwin) Young. Bill was the youngest of six children, and he attended and graduated from Olathe High School (class of 1948), where he excelled in football and basketball, among other sports.
He met the love of his life, Nancy Arlene Barnes, on August 16, 1947. They were married on March 25, 1950, in Olathe, Kansas. Together they raised their three children, Craig, Kent, and Nanette.
Bill was an avid golfer and a champion at the sport, as well as a noted singles and doubles tennis player for decades.
His career path began in the construction industry as a builder. Over time he became the developer, proud owner, and lauded manager of numerous multifamily housing complexes throughout the Midwest.
He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. Nothing gave him more pleasure in life than the time he spent with his grandchildren.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Kenneth Young, Norman Young, and Stanley Young, and one sister, Dorothy Atwood, and four sisters-in-law: Sadie Young, Leona Young, Florene Young, and Vivian Young, and one brother-in-law Richard Atwood. He was also preceded in death by one grandson-in-law, Lawrence P. Henderson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Nancy Young, two sons, William Craig Young and his wife Debbe of Overland Park, Kansas, Steven Kent Young and his wife Clista of The Villages, Florida, and one daughter Nanette Lundgren and her husband Dave of Overland Park, Kansas. He will be greatly missed by his six grandchildren: Heather Ventura (and spouse Stephen Ventura Jr), Ruth Sigler (and spouse Jerry Sigler), Jason Young Lundgren (and spouse Mikey Lundgren), Jennifer Johnson (and spouse Jeffery Johnson), Brittan Young-Henderson, and Cole Young. He will be sadly missed by his six great grandchildren: Connor Ventura, Katherine Sigler, Olivia Sigler, Sophia Sigler, Bridget Young Henderson, and Genevieve Young Henderson. He is also survived by a brother, Milton Young, of Lenexa, Kansas.
Funeral service 10:00 a.m. Friday morning, November 26, 2021, at the McGilley & Frye Funeral Home, 105 East Loula Street Olathe, Kansas. Internment in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 9501 South 159th Street, Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Friday morning one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
