Terry “Hillbilly” Johnson rode into the sunset on 12/11/2023 at the age of 66, at his home in Topeka, Kansas. He was courageous in his battle against cancer. Throughout this battle, although he suffered pain, his zest for life was always present. He continued to smile, laugh and tease his loved ones, often calling his girlfriend Leann DeLong “Nurse Rachet”.
Terry grew up in the “hollers” of Kingsport, Tennessee with his older brother Ricky Johnson and identical twin Tommy Johnson. He loved to share stories about his upbringing and although the circumstances were tough, he had many fond memories of his brothers Ricky and Tommy, aunts Brenda Sisk and Faye Johnson, and Uncle Jerry “Mouse” Johnson.
Terry moved to Topeka, Kansas in the late 70’s and worked at the Frito Lay plant for 36 years. He was a very hard worker and received recognition from the company and his peers for his dedication. He married Darlene Henderson in 1978, together they had one son, Chad Johnson.
Terry was beloved by his family and many friends. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles, notably a 1976 Sportster, 1980 Shovelhead, and 2010 Ultra Classic. He and his best friend Brent “Rick” Ruse and son Chad made many memories riding. He would always remind everyone of the golden rule “keep the shiny side up”. He enjoyed classic car shows and longed to have back any of his memorable rides, a 1955 Chevy, 1968 Mustang Fastback, and a 1972 Chevy Vega. Terry enjoyed everything motorsports related, especially dirt track racing, sprint cars, NHRA, and NASCAR.
Terry touched many lives and will be remembered by all, especially for his humor, big heart, and willingness to help others.
Terry was preceded in death by his Granny Tennessee Tisha “Tinnie” Johnson, Grandpa Lester Thomas Johnson, Father Charles Hagen Johnson, Mother Imogene Bullock, and older Brother Ricky Johnson.
He is survived by his identical twin Brother Tommy Johnson, Son and Daughter-In-Law Chad and Sasha Johnson, grandkids Harper, Hagan, and Hendricks Johnson, girlfriend Leann DeLong, Leann’s daughter and son-in-law Kristin and Justin Brown, Leann’s grandkids Haylee McLain and Mason Young, and Leann’s son Nathan DeLong.
There will be a Celebration of Life in the late Spring of 2024 at Lake Shawnee in Topeka, Kansas, date to be determined.
