On April 12, 2024, our world grew a bit dimmer as heaven welcomed another beautiful angel and soul. Ellen Garner, aged 76, peacefully transitioned, cocooned in the love of her cherished family. Ellen's journey began on April 7, 1948, in Cassville, Missouri, where she drew her first breath and later found her footing in Walsh, Colorado, where she spent her formative years.
At the tender age of 17, Ellen's life took a beautiful turn when she crossed paths with Wayne, her soon-to-be husband, who had returned from military service in the Army. Their love story unfolded in the quaint streets of Walsh, culminating in marriage on July 22, 1965.
Ellen and Wayne embarked on a new chapter in Kansas City, where Ellen dedicated nearly four decades of her life to Hayward’s Barbecue. In her role, she not only served countless patrons but also filled their hearts with warmth and their stomachs with joy. Her culinary prowess extended beyond the restaurant, as she delighted in hosting grand holiday feasts, with her renowned World’s Greatest chocolate pie stealing the show.
A woman of indomitable strength, Ellen confronted life's trials with unwavering courage and grace, serving as a beacon of inspiration to all who crossed her path. Her absence leaves a void in our lives that can never be filled, but her spirit will forever illuminate our hearts.
Ellen's unwavering devotion to her husband, Wayne, and her boundless love for her children—Wayne Jr., Rhonda, and Michelle—defined her essence. She exemplified kindness, compassion, and selflessness, always placing the needs of her loved ones above her own.
Though Ellen has bid farewell to this earthly realm, she leaves behind a legacy that will endure through the generations. She now joins her parents, Hattie and Pat, her brothers Rodney and Charles, and her brothers-in-law Ervin, Mike, Rick, Jerry and Dee, in eternal rest.
Ellen is survived by her beloved husband, Wayne; her children, Wayne Jr., Rhonda (Jon) Mercer, Michelle (Nick) McCarty; her adoring grandchildren, Coleton, Amery, Jacob, Keira, Bailey, Nick, and Kinsley; as well as her sisters Betty Jo, Deanie, Priscilla, brother Mickey, and sisters-in-law Paula, Judy and Myrna.
In celebration of Ellen's remarkable life, a gathering will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the McGilley and Frye Funeral Home in Olathe, Kansas. Let us come together to honor her memory, sharing stories and memories that will keep her spirit alive in our hearts forevermore.
