Marjorie “Marj” Cecil Hoyle Finan Lyon was embraced by a wide circle of family and friends as she entered God’s presence on October 14, 2015. First in line was her husband, Mike. They twirled around the dance floor to celebrate their freedom from the physical limitations that plagued them during the final years.
Marj was third daughter of John Aubone and Olave Alice (Owen) Hoyle born on January 22, 1925 in Newark, New Jersey. The roots of her parents’ family tree extend deep into English soil. Her parents went their separate ways when Marj was quite young. Her mother remarried Henry James “Jerry” Finan. In her heart, she considered Jerry her dad and paid to adopt him when she was a teenager.
Marj’s rare gift was the ability to recognize hurting in others and to reach out a hand. She started school in New York City and graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle, Washington in 1942 at sixteen years old. She entered the University of Washington nursing school. She met her beloved John Chapin “Mike” Lyon a few months before he was shipped to basic training in New Orleans. She followed him and they were married there on November 4, 1944. Her parents gave their permission with the stipulation that she complete her training to become a nurse. Marj and Mike shared a love of outdoor activities throughout their lifetime.
Marj’s first nursing job was as a public health nurse in Seattle. She worked in a variety of nursing jobs over her lifetime. Her last full-time position was at Fircrest, a state residence for the multi handicapped in Seattle.
The stroke that beset Mom in January 2008 forced her from the role as giver to receiver of care. She made the decision to join the Good Samaritan Community in Olathe in August 2008. They embraced and tenderly cared for her during her final years.
Marj was predeceased by her husband Mike in 2003 and her son Jim in 2014. She will be fondly remembered by her daughter Pamela Miller of Olathe, her grandsons Kevin Miller of Amarillo and Trevor Lyon of El Paso, Texas. She welcomed her first great grandson last year.
Marj will be cremated according to her wishes. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday, October 19th at the Olathe Good Samaritan Center (20705 W. 151st St., behind Olathe Medical Center). In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in her honor may be made to: Good Samaritan Society of Olathe 20705 West 151st Street Olathe, Kansas 66061.
