John “Jack” Joseph O’Brien, age 84 of Olathe, KS passed away on June 10th at his home. A Vigil prayer and Rosary will be conducted at 5:30 pm Friday, June 15th at the McGilley & Frye Funeral Home – 105 E. Loula-Olathe followed by a visitation until 8 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, June 16th at 9 am at St. Paul Catholic Church, 900 Honeysuckle, Olathe. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa.
John was born November 3, 1933 in Manhattan, KS to Lawrence & Leona (Umscheid) O’Brien. He was the 2nd of 8 children. He attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School in Wamego, KS & graduated from Wamego High School in 1952. He served in the US Army from 1956-58. John was united in marriage to Mary Josephine Hill July 21, 1962. To this union, 2 children were born, Robert Kyle & Alice Anne.
John was employed with the Kansas Department of Transportation for 40 years. He continued his working career for 10 more years as a project inspector for Wilson & Co. Engineering. John was very active in his church was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1913 and assembly 2260 fourth degree. John enjoyed many activities with his family & friends & never met a stranger. He loved the outdoors, sports & attending his grandchildren’s events.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Clifford “Kip” O’Brien, his sisters, Anita Siegel & Judy Dandurand. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo, brothers Jim, Harry & Pat (Salina, KS), sister Jane Spurrier (Wichita, KS), son Robert (Jenny), grandchildren, Callie & Cavan (Louisburg, KS), daughter Alice (Mike) Werth (Philadelphia, PA).
