Born in Cleveland, Tennessee, John was the last surviving sibling among eight brothers and one sister, closing the final chapter of an extraordinary generation.
He joined the Marine Corp in 1946 and spent 3 years active duty and 3 years as a ready reservist.
John was the devoted husband of the late Bessie Chastain. They eloped to Dalton, Georgia in 1947 during one of his leaves. Together they built a life rich in love, laughter, and family. Their marriage of 64 years was a gift.
They later moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where he worked for Owens Corning Fiberglass for 25 years as an electrician and inspector.
A proud Marine, John served his country with honor and courage—carrying with him the values of duty and resilience throughout his life. His resilience was reflected in the independence he maintained throughout his final years.
John was a man of many interests. He had a deep love for country music and could often be found playing his guitar and singing with a smile. He loved reminiscing of songs from his younger days, often singing a part of the tune and providing history behind the song or the artist along the way. Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford remained a favorite tune throughout his life.
Despite being from a different era, John had a lifelong curiosity and enthusiasm — especially when it came to new technology. Whether it was exploring the latest gadget or learning how things worked, his fascination never faded. His openness to the future, even in his later years, was inspiring.
John was a proud father to seven children: Linda (Steve), Ann (the late Jim), David (Patty), Danny, Susan (Rick), Judy, and Steve. His legacy lives on through 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
He loved visiting with his grandchildren where they would exchange stories & travel experiences, talk world news, and share advice on how to fix their cars and houses. He was the first to step up and help someone if they needed it, whether it be a ride, a quick repair, encouragement for an upcoming endeavor, or a joke to make them laugh.
He will be remembered for his stories, love of music, independent spirit, love for his family, and a legacy built on generosity and curiosity. John's life was a song—full of rich notes, heartfelt lyrics, and a rhythm that will echo through generations.
A visitation for John will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home & Cremation Service, located at 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061.
