Born Norma Jean Hoyt on July 26, 1945 in Pensacola Florida, she was known by many as “Aunt Jean.” Jean graduated high school in her childhood home of Cimarron, Kansas, before attending Phillips University in Oklahoma. She received her BSN from KU in 1967 and in 1969 became the first hemodialysis nurse at KU Medical Center. Later, she worked as the head ICU nurse at Olathe Medical Center and later as a home health/hospice nurse for Visiting Nurse Association and Catholic Charities.
She dedicated her life to caring for others, even after her retirement in 2011. Jean was active in the choir and congregational care committee at De Soto United Methodist church. She was known as a friend to anyone whom she met, two-legged or four. She was passionate about her family and her faith, and relished the simple things in life like a good cup of coffee, a friendly conversation and a serious game of cards.
Jean is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Betty and Chris Schotanus, nieces Beatrice and Sarie Schotanus, nephew Nathaniel Schotanus, his wife, Karen and their daughter, Holly. She was preceded in death by her parents Lillian (Peg) and Charles Hoyt, great-nephew Garrett Blair, and friends George Clark and Dennis Cook. A memorial service will be held at De Soto United Methodist Church on Wednesday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to De Soto United Methodist Church or the Cancer Fund of America.
