Doris Johnson Lane

and Nelle Blythe Couch Johnson. She grew up in Adel, IA. Her mother died when she was 7 and she was raised by her aunt and grandparents. She graduated from Adel High School and attended Iowa State College at Ames for a year, then entered Research Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas

City, where she graduated in 1932. In 1933, she married Charles Orr Lane, who was in the editorial department of the KC Star-Times. The family moved to Olathe in 1946. When World War II began, she worked in the Red Cross Blood Bank Program.

She worked as an RN at Research Hospital and at the KS School for the Deaf. When a bond issue for a hospital in Olathe failed, she joined with Margaret Deshler to form the Olathe Registered Nurses Group to raise funds for the hospital. After much planning, networking and consciousness raising, along with many bake sales, rummage sales and other fund rasing ideas, the Olathe Community Hospital opened in 1953. She was on the hospital board there and at Olathe Medical Center for 22 years and was the first woman president. She was active in the hospital auxiliary, working in the radiology mammography dept., the blood mobile, and other areas. She served as nursing chairman of the Johnson County Red Cross for 16 years. She was with PTA while her son was in school, ending as council president, and she worked with Headstart and school health programs.

The family served as host family for an AFS student from Switzerland.She served with VISTA for a year on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota, working with health programs for low-income people of all ages. As part of the Olathe Emergency Assistance Program, she managed the Clothing Closet at First United Methodist Church (now Grace United Methodist) and she organized the food pantry at the church. She served on numerous church boards and ommissions. She belonged to Chapter FL, P.E.O., and the Olathe chapter of DAR, and she was on the Cedar House board. She also had served as staff member and as a supervisor at the Crisis Intervention Center in Kansas City. For relaxation, she loved gardening and bird-watching.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck; sisters, Ruth McCortney and Ramona Ball; brother, Byron Johnson; and half-sister, Anita Magnusson. She is survived by her son, Jim, and daughter-in-law, Lu; grandson, Matthew; and half-brother, Lee Johnson. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 30, 2015 at Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 Ridgeview Rd. Olathe, KS. 66061. Burial in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, 13901 Blackbob Rd. Olathe, KS. 66062. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 a.m. Monday at the church prior to the service.
