Chuck was born to Norman and Neola Wood on April 23rd, 1950 in Colorado Springs, CO. He was raised on a farm in Denison, KS until his father passed away when he was 11. He learned the joy of cooking as a teenager helping his mother take care of his younger siblings. He graduated from Valley Fall High School in 1968. Chuck and Kathy met on a blind date while Chuck was in college and dated long distance while he was in school. Chuck graduated from Kansas State College of Pittsburg with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology in 1972 and married his soulmate the next weekend. Chuck and Kathy settled in Olathe, KS where he started his career in small electronics components repair for King Radio. While the company would eventually be called Honeywell, he would spend the next 48 years repairing aircraft radio components and certifying them for flight.
As a parent, Chuck built a rich life in Olathe- raised children, welcomed grandchildren and participated in the Westside Church Community. Chuck was a curious soul and an avid reader who valued learning and creating new things. Be it gardening, woodworking, maintaining his fish tanks or trying new recipes on his smoker; he was a man that was always willing to try something new. Chuck and Kathy enjoyed traveling to Branson and taking road trips across the country. As a parent Chuck made memories with his kids, whether it was pushing them on the swings, coaching softball, volunteering to help the marching band or teaching them his secrets at the smoker and pitching in with raising his grandchildren while his daughter was deployed.
At Westside Church, Chuck was actively involved as the church choir grew and changed into the worship team. He never claimed to be a great singer but humbly insisted he “made a joyful noise”. His faith was manifested in the way he helped others. Whether it was a colleague at work, a neighbor, or a family member, Chuck would always make himself available.
Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Norman, his mother Neola, his step-father Carl, his brother Jerry and his daughter-in-law Sallie. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his children Dawn, Angie, Crystal and Jared, his son-in-laws Marc and Jim, his grandchildren Kaitlyne, Jacob, Hannah, James and Charlie, his siblings Roger and Renae, his nieces and nephews and his dear friends.
A visitation for Charles will be held Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061. A funeral service will occur Friday, January 20, 2023 at 10:00 AM at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
