V. Marcette Armstrong

V. Marcette Armstrong born October 25, 1919 in Kiefer, Oklahoma to Mae and Harve Wheeler. Marcette was the youngest of three children, and grew up around oil fields that were so lit up at night that they looked like the circus mostly in Seminole, OK. Marcette enjoyed participating in sports, especially tennis, during her youth. She enjoyed watching tennis, football and the Olympics all of her life. She graduated from Seminole High School in 1937, and then attended Seminole junior College for two years, the Teacher College in Ada for one year and then graduated from Oklahoma A&M (OSU) in 1942 with a degree in Elementary Education. Marcette later earned a Masters Degree from OSU. She started her teaching career in Burbank, OK in a combination 3rd and 4th grade classroom with 43 students. She taught there two years, and then moved to teach in Blackwell, Ok for three years. The job she loved the most was her 11 years in Ponca City, OK teaching the 2nd grade. Marcette finished her career teaching 2nd grade at Hilldale School in the Putnam City School District from 1965-1983. She was a devoted teacher. Marcette was also a devoted daughter who took care of her mother from 1952 until her mother died in 1979. Marcette and her mother were both big parts of the growing up of niece Carol E. Whaylen of Ft. Worth and nephew Thad H. Evans. After she retired, she travelled extensively with her sister Helen. They went to Hong Kong, Formosa, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and Switzerland and to Russia twice. Marcette volunteered at the information booth at Will Rogers International Airport for 12 years, she also volunteered and achieved lifetime volunteer status at Baptist Memorial Hospital for 25 years. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, older brother Hershel Wheeler and older sister Helen Ruth Evans. Marcette was very grateful for her church family, and especially the Ronald Tepe family. A graveside service will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery on Saturday at 2:00pm October 20, 2012.
