Tom was born and raised in Oklahoma, moving to Oklahoma City as a small child. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma before earning a Master of Art from Northeastern State University.
In 1978, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Fire Control Technician for Ballistic Missiles and spending most of that time on the USS James Monroe SSBN 622. His time in the Navy would take him all over the country, over those 8 years he would live in Groton, Connecticut, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Charleston, South Carolina, Kings Bay, Georgia, and Pascagoula, Mississippi. In 1986, he would return home to Moore, Oklahoma. Then in 2009 he moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma. Following his Leukemia diagnosis in September 2018, he returned to Oklahoma City in order to be nearer to family and to his doctors.
He married Debbie Sue Meyer on April 28, 1979. The couple shared many years of adventure together, raising their three children with love and laughter. Tom was a good man, who enjoyed life in a big way. He enjoyed teaching High School Drama as well as being an active part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). For him, the perfect day would involve a long drive in a convertible with the top down, just flipping a coin to choose the next direction to turn.
He is preceded in death by both parents and his grandchildren Brittany Darlene Michelle Welch and Christian Justice Makay Johnson.
He is survived by his wife Debbie Sue (Meyer) Johnson; his children Tristan “TJ” Thomas Johnson, wife Janell, of Ada, Oklahoma, Traci “Bella” Dawn Johnson, husband Jasen, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and LaTisha Renee Loveless of Luther, Oklahoma; his siblings James Dale Johnson of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Colby Grant Johnson, wife Jessica, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Shaina Johnson Byars, husband Joshua, of McLoud, Oklahoma; fourteen grandchildren: Dakota Kelton Welch Johnson, Faith Darlene Lillian Johnson, Tristan Hunter Michael Johnson, Jolen Mary Jalaska Johnson, Wyatt Gabriel Vergil Johnson, Elizabeth Renae Hope Johnson, Reba Abigail Kimberly Johnson, Bryar Alexander David Stevens, Serenity Rose Lawrence Johnson, Mattie Loveless, Cadie Loveless, and Liam Loveless; as well as many nieces and nephews.
