Owen Bennett left this vale of tears on April 1, 2015. He would not have approved of life described as a vale of tears, however. He would have preferred, “a vale of laughter or happiness.” He was ninety years old at the time of his death. A benevolent Creator gave him more days than most men to get things right and if he has wronged or hurt anyone along the way, he is sorry.
Owen was born and attended school in Holdenville, OK. After one year of study and basketball at Oklahoma A & M, he entered military service. He served in the infantry in the 42nd, Rainbow Division in Europe and returned to Oklahoma in 1946.
After receiving a B. S. in geological engineering at the University of Oklahoma, he made a career in the oil and gas business. Owen’s business took him to Kansas, Tulsa, Houston, and Oklahoma City. He worked for Signal Oil and Gas of California and managed the King Resources office in Oklahoma City before becoming an independent geologist. His interests outside of his work included travel, golf, bible study, gardening, reading and most sports, especially basketball.
Owen met his wife, Phyllis, on a blind date their first week at the University of Oklahoma and they were married in 1950. Since his marriage, he has always focused his attention on his family. His wife, Phyllis, their daughter, Linda Brinkworth, and her son, Steven, second daughter, Lyle Thornton, her husband, Bill, and her son, Taylor, and his son, Bennett, were all very special to him, as was his namesake, Rob Bennett, Rob’s wife, Linda, and their children, Katie Hobson and her husband Michael, and Barry and his wife, Afton, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and many good friends.
Owen was a lifelong Methodist and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. He was a people person and enjoyed his many friends.
Services to celebrate his life are planned for Saturday April 11 at 1:00pm at Grace United Methodist Church, 6316 N. Tulsa Ave OKC, OK. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to United Methodist Circle of Care or Infant Crisis Services.
