Michael David Martin, 78, after suffering complications from a brain bleed, went to be with his Lord on February 7, 2022. Mike was born in Paris, Illinois on August 31, 1943, the oldest child of Robert David Martin and Norma Pauline (Beck) Martin. When he was 12, his parents moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico where Michael graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1961. In junior high school, Mike met Cheryl Lynn Wildman and it was love at first sight for both of them. They married on August 14, 1964 and made their home in Las Cruces, NM. Mike graduated from New Mexico State University in 1967 with a degree in Engineering Technology and accepted a job with Honeywell Computers in Phoenix, AZ. The couple attended the Church of God in Phoenix and both sang with the “Ron Patty Singers”. (Ron is the father of Sandi Patty, the gospel singer, and was musical director at the church). With their love of music, they both continued to sing in the church choir wherever they lived.
Mike and Cheryl were blessed with two sons, Robert Lynn, and David Michael. Mike coached them in soccer, assisted with Cub Scouts, supported them with all their sporting activities, made sure they both became excellent skiers, and fixed their cars when they broke down.
Mike worked for Honeywell for 32 years in Phoenix, AZ, twice, Enid, OK, Colorado Springs, CO, Borger, TX, and Lubbock, TX. He received profession recognition by receiving the Honeywell Project Manager Award, and the Honeywell Technical Services Citation. The couple moved to Oklahoma City, OK, in 2001, where Mike worked as a Project Manager for Johnson Controls and later for a Performance Consulting Group until 2010. At the time of his death Mike had been employed at Wal-Mart for 11 years.
Mike was baptized in 1982 and attended The Crossings Church in Oklahoma City. He was a current member of Woodward Masonic Lodge #189, and a 33-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Patron at Peoria Chapter #59 in Phoenix, Arizona and Queen Esther Chapter #117 in Woodward, OK.
He was an Amateur Radio Operator, with a call sign of WA5ILD; a bowling champion in high school; enjoyed watching old Western TV shows and reading Western novels. Mike loved trains. He had many sets and loved to play trains with his two grandsons, of whom he was so proud. He loved Buddy Holly music and was a fan of Clint Eastwood. Mike was a great “handyman” and a skilled auto mechanic who could repair almost anything. He was a wonderful photographer for both his family and the Eastern Star and helped create the memories we have today.
His parents, Robert and Norma Martin, and his sister, Loretta Anderson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Cheryl Martin, of the home; two sons, Robert Martin, Oklahoma City; David Martin and wife Amy and their two sons, Miles and Brody, Edmond, OK; his brother, Max Martin and wife Donna of New Albany, IN; sister-in-law Carole Froage and husband John of Gage, OK; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many long-time friends.
