Mary was born to James L. and Edwina Spivey in Ft.Worth, TX, which was her home until attending Texas Women's College in Denton, TX, and then the University of Texas, Austin, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Languages. She met her future husband, A. Cooper Lyon, on a blind date at the Delta Gamma house and shortly thereafter Cooper had to leave for the war, but told her he would be marrying her when he returned. Cooper and Mary were married 48 years when he died in 1995.
Mary was gifted in a great many things; she was an accomplished pianist, skilled seamstress, and popular book reviewer. Her expertise at Bridge was well-known and she also produced beautiful handwork. This was in addition to raising five children, reading 3 or 4 books each week, and being Cooper's cheerleader the 32 years he owned and operated The Anna Maude Cafeteria. Mary was a Life Member of the Pianist's Club and a member of the Acorn Club, Civic Music Society and Memorial Christian Church where she taught Sunday School and Spanish.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Cooper, and his parents, Gay and Eliot Lyon. She is survived by her brother, James L. "Pat" and Suzanne Spivey of Santa Fe, NM, and their son, Jim; and her children, Mark Lyon and Jane Tillman, Austin, TX, and their sons Eliot and Andrew; Dennis and Madeline Lyon Lewelling, Oklahoma City and their son Stephen (Rachel); Steve and Janet Lyon Bushey, Stuttgart, AR, and their children Leah, Evan (Angie), James (Lauren), Samuel (Samantha) and Hannah; Bryan and Virginia Lyon Cooper, Coppell, TX, and their daughters, Megan and Hayley; and Charlie and Martha Lyon, Littleton, CO, and their daughters Emily and Eliza. Mary also had three darling great-grandchildren, Emma, Cooper and Isaiah Bushey, children of Evan and Angie.
The family deeply appreciates the care and love given to Mary by the staff of Clare Bridge Memory Gardens North and Good Shepherd Hospice.
