Lucina Jane ( Janey) Lukens Kennedy was born in Houston Texas on June 14th, 1933. She died after a brief illness in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 5th, 2024. Janey’s parents John and Lucina Lukens lived in one hundred different towns before moving to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where John Lukens, who was in the seismograph business, started his own company. Janey attended grade school in Shawnee, Oklahoma and high school at The Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas. She went to college at the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She also attended the University of Central Oklahoma.
Janey married Wesley Whitlock in 1953 and was divorced from him in 1963. Of this union she had three children, Lynn, John and David. In 1980 she married John Robert “Bob” Kennedy and was married to him until his death in 1997. Bob was the love of Janey’s life and through that marriage she gained four great step-children, Ann, Michael, John and Brigid. Bob and Janey had many friends and traveled extensively until his death.
In 2003 while on a cruise in the Mediterranean Janey met Jeff Moore from Yorkshire England, they married in 2006, and traveled the world together until he needed to return home to England for health reasons. She and Jeff were divorced in 2018.
In her early years, Janey was active in politics, the Oklahoma City Art Guild, the Oklahoma City Sculpture Society, and the Connoisseur Club. In 1978 she joined the YANA women’s group and was active in this group until her death. Janey was predeceased by her parents, her son John Whitlock, her step-son Michael Kennedy and her daughter in law Marta Whitlock. She is survived by her children, Lynn Houser, David (Marta)Whitlock, Ann(Mike)Tepper, John(Kiran)Kennedy, Brigid Kennedy, and her grandchildren Eric(Xiaoling)Houser, Eric(Cassandra) Jochim, Adam Jochim, Ian (Vanessa)Whitlock, Emma (Jerry) Young, Jake (Kacey) Kennedy, Zoe Kennedy and Michel(Kirstie)Tepper. She is also survived by great grandchildren Cole and Amelia Tepper, Clive Houser and Madeleine Jochim.
At the time of her death Janey lived at the Vineyard Cottages where she spent wonderful hours with her “80's ladies.” They met three times a week at Janey’s cottage for lively conversation and game playing. Janey loved painting, and having beautiful parties. At the time of her death she had been on 22 cruises and 31 trips all over the world. Janey was happy to have lived a full life, and appreciate all of the gifts that life had given her. She was content in knowing that “she was enough.” Her proudest moments included watching the amazing children her children and step children raised, attending grandson Ian’s wedding and being a member of AA since 1978.
Janey loved her family and friends, and lived a full and productive life. She always had a bright smile and a hug waiting for anyone who needed it. She was an accomplished painter and sculptor, and her work is in the homes of all of her family and many of her friends.
Janey and the family would like to give special thanks to the amazing care givers at the Statesmen’s Club/ Here for You who took such loving care of her over the last several months.
A celebration of Janey’s amazing life will take place on July 26, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper, 6600 Broadway Extension, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A reception will follow at Hahn Cook immediately following the service. Interment will be held after the reception and is for family only.
