Lola Jean Ashford, age 93 passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024. She began life as Lola Jean Pigg on May 2nd, 1930. She was the 5th of 8 children born to Charles and Mary Pigg in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Her family endured the Great Depression as well as the death of her father around 1935. In college, she worked as a waitress and graduated with a degree in education. She began teaching elementary school and befriended a coworker named Myrtle Edmond who happened to have a single brother. Lola began dating Logan B. Ashford and they were married on February 24, 1957. They bought a house in Midwest City and began attending church at first Christian of Midwest City. Lola worked at Steed Elementary wile Logan worked at Tinker AFB. Their son John was born in 1959 and Lola quit teaching to become a stay-at-home mom. Their second son Clifton arrived in 1961. By the 1970’s Lola Jean began teaching Sunday school at the church while gardening the yard and canning green beans. Lola fought and survived caner in the 1970’s as well. Logan retired in the 1980’s to help Lola do even more gardening. 1991 saw son Clifton marry his wife Sandra and Lola’s first grandchild Alissa Nicole was born the following year. Son John married his wife Julie in 1995 and their daughter Jordan Leigh arrived in 1997. Logan contracted cancer and passed away in early 2000. Her third and last grandchild Joshua Logan arrived in June of that year. Lola’s health began declining with arthritis following the death of her husband and doting upon her grandkids would become a major priority. In life, Lola Jean remained steadfast and loving to her 12 siblings (7 by blood and 5 by marriage) as well as their spouses. There were an additional 27 people that could call her a caring and loving aunt.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents Charles and JL, her sisters-in-law Beth, Yvonne, Myrtle, Christine, and Lenora, and her brothers-in-law Walter, Kenneth, Charlie, Clyde, Luther, Ollie, Ernie, Delmer and Pat and 5 nephews Larry, Lynn, Guy, David and Dwight. She is survived by her sister Joyce, sisters-in-law Priscilla and Sammie, her brother-in-law Wesley, her son John and his wife Julie, her son Clifton and Patty, as well as grandkids Alissa, Jordan, and Joshua, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all who knew her’ Family, friends, church and neighbors.
A visitation for Lola will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, 8805 NE 23rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73141. A funeral service will occur Friday, February 2, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Bill Eisenhour Northeast Chapel, 8805 Northeast 23rd St, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73141.
Lola will be laid to rest in Arlington Memory Gardens immediately following the funeral service.
