Larry Dean Whittle

It is with great sadness that the family of Larry Dean Whittle, Pop, shares the news of his passing on Saturday, September 16, 2017 surrounded by his family, at the age of 70. Larry was born in Mt. Pleasant TX, to Charlie and Bernice Whittle on December 9, 1946. He was one of six children, being survived by the other five siblings, Marquette Betts, Janice Young, Kenneth Whittle, Randy Whittle and Ronnie Whittle along with their spouses Roy Betts, Pearl Whittle, Delaine Whittle and James Young, deceased, and many nieces and nephews. On Helen’s side, Larry is also survived by Jimmy and Brenda Hampton and Karmen Gray, deceased, along with many nieces and nephews. Larry is also lovingly remembered by his beautiful wife of 51 years, Helen Whittle and their children Deanna, Chad and Brad Whittle. Larry will also be fondly remembered by his only granddaughter Daylan Whittle, whom she called him Poppy, and he loving called her “Miss America”. Larry also has countless family and friends that will miss him dearly.

Larry left East Texas shortly after high school and moved to Pampa, Texas where he met the love of his life, Helen Hampton. It was truly love at first site. He proposed just three days later, they were married three months later and three years later they had three children. The family finally settled in Yukon Ok, in 1980 to present. Pop worked in the oil field his entire life and was a true rags to riches story. He successfully started his own business, Whittle and Neher Sales in 1986 and later began a second business of building his line of oilfield equipment. He shipped equipment around the world from Oklahoma City. While working in the oil patch he met and made lifelong friends

Pop enjoyed life to the fullest and his favorite thing in life was to sing, he was quite the karaoke king. He had the opportunity to sing back up with many famous bands as well as travel and win awards for his singing. If you ever met Larry, you left with one of his CDs in hand. Pop never met a stranger and loved visiting with people; he definitely had the gift of gab. If Larry had met you once you were a friend for life.

Because of Poppy’s humble beginning, he understood hard work and the struggles of getting ahead in life. As success came, he was very generous to others and gave selflessly without wanting recognition for his good works. As he became sick in April, many people visited him and we as the family learned of all his good deeds and generosity towards others he bestowed. He fed the hungry, clothed the poor, housed the homeless, and gave jobs to people no one else would hire.

Visitation will begin Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., the family will greet friends Friday night from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on September 22nd. A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be held on 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Hahn-Cook Street & Draper, 6600 Broadway Extension, Oklahoma City with Rev. Ronnie Whittle and Rev. Jim Freeman officiating. Interment will follow the service in the family plot at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Charitable donations may be made to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma in Larry’s honor, or to the charity of your choice.
