John was one of four children born to John Edward Peterson and Virginia Johnston Peterson Williams on February 6, 1952 in Nashville, Tennessee. When John was 5 years old, the family moved to Oklahoma City and that is where he stayed until building a home in Yukon in 1982.
John joined the Army National Guard, serving from 1971-1977. He attained the rank of Sergeant E5 and was a Medic in the Oklahoma National Guard.
A long-time resident of Oklahoma, John graduated from John Marshall High School in 1971 and went on to further his studies receiving his Associates Degree in Automotive Mechanics from Oklahoma State University - Okmulgee in 1974.
John used his skills and trade working for 40 years as a mechanic, eventually becoming service manager, at Eskridge Oldsmobile/Lexus. He worked and mentored young mechanics for 28 years at Eskridge while serving on the board of multiple trade schools and community colleges to develop young mechanics. He continued his work across Oklahoma in various service roles until he retired. He enjoyed his work, touched many lives, and made many friends throughout his career.
While working for Eskridge, John was introduced to a coworker, Sharon Kay Kitson, and their young romance blossomed. John and Sharon were happily married on October 10, 1975. Together they raised two sons of which they are so proud.
John was ever-present in his son’s lives. Always coaching their baseball and basketball teams, hauling them to tennis events and lessons, and volunteering with several programs at Mustang Public Schools. He held a strong passion for leading, mentoring and developing young men and continued this throughout his sons and grandchildren’s lives. Throughout his life, John always found great fulfillment in spending time with his children and grandchildren.
John leaves to carry on his legacy his beloved wife of 47 years, Sharon Peterson; eldest son Joshua Peterson and his wife Stephanie Peterson; youngest son Johnathan Peterson and his wife Danielle Peterson; grandchildren Joshua Peterson, Jr., Madison Peterson, Aubrey Peterson, Jonah Peterson and Clara Peterson; siblings Le Ann Johnston and husband Wayne Johnston, James Peterson and wife Kathi Meyer, Gay Speake and hustand Steven Speake as well as many other loved ones and dear friends.
Visitation will be at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens on Monday, January 23rd from 3 pm – 7 pm. The service to celebrate John’s life will be Wednesday, January 25th at 10 am at Our Lord’s Lutheran Church, 2900 W. Hefner Rd., Oklahoma City, OK 73120. His committal service with military honors will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family would like to invite those who can join them for lunch at Chapel Hill following the burial.
