JoAnn was born on October 29, 1944, in Scotland, South Dakota, one of twelve children of Rev. Andrew B. and Bertha C. Meyer. JoAnn and her husband, Glenn Morton, served the funeral industry for 30 years, moving throughout the United States.
Her final city of residence was Edmond, Oklahoma, near her son Shaun, where she served the University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Education and Professional Studies for eleven years, before retiring in 2018.
JoAnn will be missed by numerous colleagues, friends, and family, including her daughter, Heather Kopecky of Houston, Texas; son, Shaun Doering and wife, Shawna Cleary of Jones, Oklahoma; daughter, Tanya Ryen, and husband, Michael of St. Robert, Missouri; daughter, Elizabeth McGuire of Pyeongtaek, South Korea; daughter, Ali Morton and wife, Pam Anderson of Louisville, Kentucky; and daughter, Christina Hibner of Atlanta, Georgia. JoAnn was loved by fifteen grandchildren: Alexandra, Allyson, Brandon, Cassandra, Conner, Hailey, Jordon, Krystina, Megan, Mikayla, Mitchell, Richard, Samuel, Shannon, and Thomas, as well as eight great-grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews.
She is survived by five siblings, Susan Deutscher, Andrew Meyer, Steve Meyer, Joy Krein, and Mary Wagner.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, husbands David Doering and Glenn Morton, and six siblings, including Jeanne DeHeer, Emily Deutscher, Cindy Jensen, Ruth Navant, Nancy Scholten, and Roberta Walding. Most will remember JoAnn for her “bajillion-dollar smile,” as well as her willingness to lend a hand and anticipate the needs of others. She was a lover of nature, music, and rocky-road ice cream.
The importance of a college education was stressed to all family members and illustrated by her service to UCO. If so inclined, donations may be made in memory of JoAnn Morton to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research at https://www.michaeljfox.org/donate.
