Joan was born in Chicago, Illinois on Dec. 24, 1941, to Sol and Anne Saperstein Maniloff. She grew up in Eagle Rock, California, graduating from Eagle Rock High School in 1959, and afterward attended the University of Southern California. In 1961, she married Joe Marshall, and they became the parents of two daughters, Cindy and Sharon.
The Marshalls operated Char-Lane Home Cleaning Services, and they moved the business from California to Norman, Oklahoma in 1967. Joan’s love of helping others eventually led her to return to school, and in 1980 she earned her bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Oklahoma. In 1995, she completed her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman’s University. She worked as a registered OT at several healthcare facilities around the Oklahoma City area, including St. Michaels, High Pointe Hospital, Midwest City Home Health.
Joan had a life-long love of horses, and together with her daughter, Sharon, she owned and operated Marshall Appaloosas in Lexington. The two traveled extensively to horse shows and competitions around the United States, Canada and Europe, where their horses won multiple awards, including national championships in both the U.S. and Canada.
Family and friends remember Joan as a caring woman with a wonderful sense of humor, who truly loved her family, her patients and her horses.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Marshall, DVM, of Lexington; daughter Cindy Devine and her husband, Lance, of Heber City, Utah; and granddaughter Sam Devine, also of Heber City. She was preceded in death by her parents.
