Jack Dougherty Stovall Jr. was born May 14, 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee to parents Jack Dougherty Stovall Sr. and Miriam Anita Holmes Stovall. Jack entered into eternal peace on May 4, 2023 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Jack grew up in Memphis, TN, where he met the love of his life Patricia Sue O’Brien. The two were married on May 16, 1953 and were lucky to have shared 70 years of love together. The couple has lived in several places after moving from Memphis. In 1954, they moved to Jonesville, VA, then to Whitehaven, TN in 1957, then to Cordova, TN before finally settling in Mustang, OK in 2003. In between that time Jack and Patricia began to grow their family, raising three children, twins, Patricia Sue and Jackie, and daughter, Miriam Anita.
Following high school graduation, Jack enlisted in the Army, Infantry, and attended Officer’s Candidate School, grew in the ranks to 2nd Lieutenant, and was a Rifleman during World War II. Jack received a Victory Medal for his time and commitment to our Country. He spent time serving overseas in Korea and was a Commander to a unit of 158 enlisted men. Jack was honorably discharged from the Army on June 4, 1947 to attend college.
Jack attended Memphis State University, the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and the University of Tennessee Pharmacy School before graduating in December 1953. He was the President of his senior class at the University and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and a Doctorate of Pharmacy.
With his Doctorate of Pharmacy degree, Jack began to work as a retail pharmacist at Jonesville Drug in Jonesville, VA from 1954-1956. He was the Owner of that prescription store from 1956-1958. He found better opportunities in Memphis, TN and worked at various pharmacy stores there from 1959-1985. In 1985, Jack became the manager of Kroger Pharmacy until his retirement in September 1991.
Jack was an active churchgoer; he was a member of Graceland Baptist Church in Whitehaven, TN for 30 years. He taught a Men’s Bible Class, was a member of the Deacon body, a Deacon Chairman for two terms, and was on several church committees. After moving to Cordova, TN, he became a member of Bellevue Baptist Church where he served alongside Pastor Adrian Rogers in the Banner Ministry and was also an usher. When the family moved to Mustang they joined the Mustang United Methodist Church and have been members ever since.
Jack was a man of many hobbies and skills. He enjoyed golf, photography, coin, stamp, and gun collecting. He was a skilled artisan, building a 30 ft. sailboat, restored a 1929 Model A Roadster, built a 19x19 den addition, and a 12x20 workshop behind their family home. His creative side continued to show when he began building radio-controlled aircrafts of 9-10 ft. wingspan. These were scale models of planes similar to the WWII Aircraft, Mustangs, and Corsairs. He actually taught Elvis Presley how to fly these handcrafted radio remote control airplanes.
When Jack wasn’t building model airplanes, he was an avid antique collector, spent time creating oil paintings, and took on projects of woodworking, like clocks, picture frames, and small furniture. He and his wife enjoyed many outdoor sports, like boating, sail boating, and horseback riding together.
Jack was a published author. He wrote books about World War II history and how to live the Christian life. Jack loved writing poems, and he also penned the tales of Captain John Quinn West of the 397th Bomb Group. He has sold over 13,000 copies of his books. They are still being distributed to bookstores in England and the United States, and can be found in many museums throughout the U.S.
