Isla Faye (Dennis) Floyd was born September 5, 1932 at her grandmother Alice’s home in Nocona, Texas to William “Willie” Edgar Dennis and Mamie Alma (Morris) Dennis.
As a young child, Isla moved frequently with her family around the country, following her father William’s work in the oil field.
Eventually, the family settled in Oklahoma City, where Isla attended Central High School and made many lifelong friends. Isla not only obtained her diploma there as a member of the graduating class of 1950, but also met her husband to be and great love of 56 years, Ralph Walter Floyd.
Isla and Ralph were married July 4, 1951. During their early years of marriage, Isla resumed the traveling life once again as the couple moved across the country during Ralph’s time in the Navy, even journeying as far as Norfolk, VA and Boston, MA. Eventually, they settled back home together in Oklahoma City near their families, where they spent the rest of their lives surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
During Ralph and Isla’s years at home raising their children, Isla balanced her career working as a manager of life underwriting at American Fidelity Assurance with being an attentive, involved wife and mother; attending PTA meetings, cutting horse competitions, ball games, dance classes, and regularly taking her children to the library to encourage their love of reading— all while cooking dinner every night, breakfast every morning, making Ralph’s work lunches, and studying in the evening to work her way up in her field.
Isla’s strength, strong will, sense of responsibility and love of family was also apparent in her later years. After her mother-in-law passed away, Isla helped her family make sure her father-in-law was taken care of. She did the same for her stepfather, and made sure her husband Ralph had everything he needed during the ten years he was ill. She did it all with grace and unwavering positivity, and was proud of her rose colored glasses until the end.
Isla Faye Floyd left this life December 15, 2023 at 91 years of age. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her family, as it was meant to be.
Isla Faye Floyd was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Walter Floyd, her mother Mamie Alma Freeman, her father William Edgar Dennis, her sister Wanda Ruth Dennis, her brother William Edgar Dennis, her son-in-law Noel David Harter II, and her granddaughter Elizabeth Noel Harter.
Isla is survived by four children; Larry Ralph Floyd of Bethany, Gary Lee Floyd and his wife Christine of Jones, Vicky Lynn Harter of Edmond, and Myra Teresa Stovall of Oklahoma City. Nine grandchildren; Katherine Lynn Farrow and her husband David, Walter Ralph Floyd and his wife Whitney, Mary Allison Harter, Mary Caitlin Williams and her husband Justin, Stephen Matthew Stovall and his wife Heather, Stephanie Lynn Smith and her husband Nick, Anna Kathleen Stovall, LeeAnn Floyd, and Andrew Joseph “Joey” Stovall, as well as thirteen (and counting) great grandchildren.
She is beloved and will be missed by many friends and family who will cherish her memory and remember her in every squeak of a rocking chair, laugh of a child, thrill of finding a treasure on sale, or sound of a baseball game. Every cardinal, rose rock, quilt, Giants game, and firework on the 4th of July will always be for her.
A funeral service for Isla will be held Friday, December 22, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 8701 Northwest Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK 73162.
