Henry D. Smith, World War II veteran, retired Oklahoma City Firefighter, and businessman passed away peacefully on May 16, 2023 at age 95.
“Hank” was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on January 11, 1928, to Henry Andrew and Essie Mae Smith. His wife, Phyllis Romana Weijk Smith, died on August 15, 2018. They were married on October 23, 1948, in Tacoma Washington and moved shortly thereafter to Oklahoma City.
Hank is survived by his daughter Linda McMahon (Bob) of Edmond and son Steve Smith of Flagstaff, AZ, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.
Hank attended Capitol Hill High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1946, becoming part of the Occupational Forces Japan at the end of the Pacific War. With the downsizing of the Army, Hank joined the Merchant Marines and served on a troop transport ship brining military personnel back to the US from the Western Pacific. He was Honorably Discharged in 1948.
On arriving back to Oklahoma City, he began working for OG&E as a lineman and in 1960 joined the Oklahoma City Fire Department, retiring in 1980. Upon retirement he was a partner with his brother, Walter B. Davis, and nephew Craig Davis, at AckFast Action of Oklahoma City.
Hank was a longtime member of Portland Avenue Baptist Church and served for a long period as the Property Manager. Throughout his life Hank was involved in various community and church endeavors along with the Retired Fire Fighters Association of OKC.
A special “thank you” from the family to the wonderful nursing and care staff along with Hospice at Bellevue Health and Rehabilitation.
There will be a viewing at Chapel Hill Funeral Home on Sunday May 21 from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens on Monday May 22 at 2:00 p.m.
