When Guy was seventeen, he enlisted into the Army, and continued his career with the US Army until May of 1971. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran, and he was also very satisfied with the completion of his GED while serving. Though he appreciated his time in the Army, he didn’t return the same. He experienced a lot of complications with his health and was eventually given a disability rating from the VA. From this he joined the Disabled American Veterans organization, which is dedicated to empowering Veterans to lead high-quality lives, while educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of Veterans transitioning back into civilian life.
Those who knew him well learned how to live life on their own terms, enjoy every moment possible, that showing up for those you love is the most important thing, and to never miss out on free food!
Guy fell in love with Cara from the first moment he saw her, it seems like the two were inseparable from the first day they met. They got the joy to experience 32 years of life together! They travelled the world and recently enjoyed a cruise to Mexico. Guy’s perfect day would be to be on a cruise with Cara, going to the casino, followed by a good meal and nap.
Guy was known to always speak his mind, but you could usually tell it came from a place of love. He was capable of eliciting a wide range of emotions from people, from nagging at you to follow through on your promises to giving you a hard time just to keep you on your toes. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, especially with handiwork. Sometimes, he would fix your problem in the most bizarre way, but at least it worked again.
His music taste wasn’t the widest range but he loved classical artists like Wolfgang Mozart and his all-time favorite song (even though it would drive Cara crazy), was the theme song to The Beverly Hillbillies.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents John Hackney and Nancy Jones and sister, Phyllis Hagar.
Guy’s life will continue to be celebrated by his loving wife, Cara Hackney, children, Michael Hackney of Utah, Ryan Hackney of Utah, Tammy Hackney-Woodward of Utah, Myia Neilson of Tennessee, and Gary Hackney of Colorado, brother, John Hackney of Arkansas, sister in life Janine Parsons, grandchildren, Brandon, Jasmine, Jordyn, Connor, Jamie, and Liam, and great-grandchildren, Noah, Levi, and Jaxtyn.
A Celebration of Life for Guy will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 8701 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73162.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Guy’s name to the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Legion. The family has requested that we celebrate Guy’s life the way he would have wanted it, so please dress comfy and casual, and prepare to share great stories and laughter as we reminisce on his life.
