Gloria Hornbeck (Huckabee) was born November 21, 1927 to her mother Eula Jane Little and Father Frank A. Huckabee “Pappy” in Covington,OK on an Oil Lease her father was managing, her mother’s sister traveled to help deliver her at home.
The family moved to Pink, OK for several years and Mom would tell us about her dad helping stranded people along Hwy 9 and her mom taking them in and feeding them. She recalled picking cotton and raising a lot of peanuts. Her and her brother Mick had good times visiting the grandparents on both sides and getting into trouble with the “cousins” too many to name them all!
Her grandpa Little nicknamed her “FUN.”
Arounf 14 years old the family moved to Capitol Hill in Oklahoma City where she graduated High School early because she was so shy! She became a “candy striper” at St. Anthony’s Hospital and went to work at Tinker AFB when she was 18 years. She changed jobs at 20 and worked for South Western Bell Telephone.
She transferred to Stockton, California with her job to be near her brother Mick who was in the Navy, there she married and had 2 girls Vicki and Terri. She brought us back to OKC and divorced and began a new life. Helping her mom in her 24 hour “Salad Bowl Café”. Working 2 jobs and driving an old Edsel car with no brakes, she met John Hornbeck, a local mechanic. They married in 1964 and he has kept her cars running ever since.
Combining 2 families wasn’t easy and we had our ups and downs. Life got better when John joined the Masons in 1978. Mom supported John in all his offices in all his lodges. She always cooked a large amount of food for all his activities.
The grandkids started arriving and she always had open arms. Her grandkids loved to spend time with her.
Gloria and John traveled after retirement and saw a lot of sights and made a lot of new friends from 1988 to 1993, their favorite was South Padre Island where we would fly the grandkids down to spend a few weeks.
Gloria was a caring wife and mother. So good natured and happy. Always had a craft in her hands. She crocheted so many blankets and lovingly gave them to all the kids. She made beautiful painted quilts as gifts. She shared all she made with friends and family.
Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, mother Eula Jane Huckabee and Frank “A” Huckabee, one brother, Billy Frank Huckabee.
