Dwight Eslick Smelser was born on July 15, 1931 in Washington, OK to Orval and Ina Mae (Eslick) Smelser. He graduated from Washington High School and enrolled at OK State University where he would go on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Dwight returned to Washington, OK and soon met the love of his life, Joe Ann Bunch, who was doing her student teaching at Washington Public Schools. Dwight and Joe Ann were soon married and went on to raise three children during their six decades together. He enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in El Paso, TX. In 1956, the family relocated to OKC and Dwight began a long career with the US Postal Service. He started as a postal clerk and worked his up to a supervisor position before retiring in the mid 1980’s. Following their retirement, Dwight and Joe Ann traveled all over the country in their RV.
Dwight was an easy going and ornery guy who loved to golf and visit Las Vegas. He was always willing to help his friends and family and he was happiest when he was spending time with his grandchildren. Dwight loved watching college football and OKC Thunder basketball, but his favorite was returning home to cheer on and support his Washington High School football and basketball teams. He enjoyed grilling steaks, gardening, and playing dominoes. Dwight’s faith was important to him and he most recently attended Sunny Lane Southern Baptist Church. He left an unmistakable mark on the lives of those he touched and he will certainly be missed by all who knew him.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joe Ann Smelser, and a son Michael Smelser. He is survived by his two children: David Smelser of OKC and Cherie Woodie and husband Gary of Del City; three grandchildren: Kristi Bostwick, Danny Bostwick and wife DawnDee, and Jessica Hilterbran and husband Aaron; as well as a great grandchild Jeremiah Bostwick.
