Grant was born on September 17th, 1949 in Great Bend, Kansas to parents Raymond and Hazel McCoy and went on to attend and graduate from Great Bend High School. Following this he met Donna E. Johnson and the two were happily married in August of 1969.
Grant enlisted in the United States Army on October 21st, 1968 and went on to serve in the Vietnam war. He was a Sergeant in the United States Army Battery A, 2D Battalion, 35th Artillery and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal on June 2nd, 1970. An excerpt from documentation of this award reads:
"Sergeant McCoy distinguished himself by heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force on April 18th, 1970 during an attack on Fire Support Base Dinh II, Binh Tuy Province, Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant McCoy together with three of his men, successfully manned and defended an eighty-five meter length of perimeter. He deceived the enemy throughout the night by firing his M-60 machine gun and M-79 grenade launcher from one position and then rapidly displacing them to another position. Sergeant McCoy's aggressiveness and leadership were unquestionably responsible for the successful defense of a large portion of the perimeter that otherwise would have required many more men to defend. Sergeant McCoy's conspicuous valor, extraordinary heroism and intrepidity in the face of fire are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army."
He went on to receive the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC, Three Overseas Bars, and a Good Conduct Medal. Grant was honorably discharged from service on October 20th, 1974.
Following his military service he had a lengthy career starting in 1987 as Owner and President of his company General Compressor Incorporated, which is still ran by his sons Corey and Jody McCoy. Grant was a hardworking man who loved spending time with his sons, granddaughters, and family.
Grant is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Donna McCoy; Sons, Corey McCoy, Jody McCoy; Grandchildren, Braylee McCoy, Brenlyn McCoy, Brielle McCoy, and Gracie McCoy.
