Betty was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma, on August 18, 1926, the sixth daughter of Hugh Bynum and Maud E. Jones. After graduating from Chickasha High School, Betty attended Oklahoma College for Women. In December 1947, she married Robert E. Lynch. The couple raised two children in Oklahoma City and were active at Wesley Methodist Church and Village Methodist. Betty was an avid bridge player and played with the same group of ladies for years.
In 1969, Betty and Robert moved to Tripoli, Libya, thus beginning their adventure in worldwide travel as Robert was transferred from country to country for the oil business. After Tripoli, the couple lived in Jakarta, Indonesia; Lagos, Nigeria; and Bangladesh. Of all these exotic places, Betty’s favorite was Jakarta, where she had a lovely garden home and an adored gibbon named Ophelia. She found her bridge group there and took up tennis.
She worked for the Oklahoma Legislature during the session in the 1960’s and again when they returned to Oklahoma City.
In 1977, after having seen a great part of the world, Betty and Robert returned to Oklahoma City, where they were active at Wesley Methodist Church and were longtime members of the 3C’s. An avid reader, Betty loved to entertain groups with her colorful book reviews. She was also an accomplished public speaker who spoke about any book that would make you laugh. Betty had a wonderful sense of humor, which was second only to her unyielding optimism. She saw the world and people with rose colored glasses as her glass was always half full.
Betty is survived by her children, Mary Lynch and wife Glenda Carlson of Tulsa and Robert Lynch and wife Daping of Suzhou, China; her four grandchildren, Benjamin Brown of Tulsa, OK, Christopher Brown of Willow Creek, CA, Michael Klaver of Oklahoma City, OK, and Allie Lynch of Suzhou, China; and countless nieces and nephews.
