Elizabeth “Betty” M. Campbell, the daughter of Charlie and Lois Stites was born in Hayward, OK on September 21, 1924. She departed this life peacefully on the morning of April 22 at her home. Betty grew up and went to Ames, OK public schools. In her childhood years, she battled and defeated polio. She was a resilient woman of great strength, humility and determination, which served her well throughout her lifetime.
Betty married Cecil W. Campbell on November 25, 1949. They made their home in Oklahoma City, OK, and she invested her life in her four sons and eventually their families. She and Cecil were married for 45 years before he passed in 1994. She was a member of Ridgecrest United Methodist Church (now Cornerstone Methodist) and was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School class. She was also a member of the Oklahoma County OSU Extension Service for many years and frequently had award-winning entries in the baking section of the Oklahoma County and State Fairs. She was a wonderful homemaker and cook. Some called her “Betty Crocker”, and others dubbed her “the Pink Cookie Lady” for the thousands of thumbprint cookies she baked and shared over the years. For many years, she and her sister enjoyed working with ceramics and became quite accomplished. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed her family and was proud of each and every one of them; always feeling the hours and years she had spent with her sons had reaped great rewards.
Betty served as the matriarch of her family for nearly three decades and she gracefully led by example. She always put her family first. Her love of family was not only outgoing – it was returned to her daily with great respect and love, as is shown by how the entire family always congregated in her home for family gatherings and to celebrate the holidays. This was the case this past Easter weekend as the entire family gathered at her home and celebrated a truly special day of fellowship. Her incredible fortitude was on full display that day as she initiated numerous intimate exchanges with family and these moments will be cherished forever.
She is survived by her four sons and their families: Steve, his wife Kathy and children Lacie, Katie, Keri and Cody; Bruce, his wife Annalisa and their children Heather, Clinton, Isaac and Hannah-Ruth; Stan, his wife Susan and children Amber, Chad and Ty; and Ted, his wife Susan and son Brady; and 27 great-grandchildren. Also, her sister, Dorothy Krause of Wichita; brother-in-law Rex Campbell of Enid; sister-in-law Rowena Kerr of Stillwater; numerous nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her greatly.
