Paul was born on December 21, 1933, in Marietta, Oklahoma, to John Wesley Scarbrough of Indian Territory Oklahoma and Jessie Beulah Johnson Scarbrough of Caddo, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. Paul grew up in Oklahoma and Oregon before graduating from Central High School in Oklahoma City and then from the University of Oklahoma with a B. A. in History and Education in 1954. He also married his lifelong love, Esther Louise Fain, of Oklahoma City in the same year. He was discharged as a Captain from the 92nd Fighter Bomber Squadron of the United States Air Force and was a clarinetist with the Oklahoma Symphony. He had two sons and worked as an insurance agent in Oklahoma City; Chicago, Illinois; and Dallas, Texas. He specialized in large-account commercial and shipping insurance until he opened his own insurance agency, Scarbrough and Medlin, in Dallas in 1980.
He loved Jesus and enjoyed serving in various churches: singing in the choir, being an elder in leadership, and working with Union Gospel Mission in Dallas. He cheered on the Sooners, played a good round of golf, and was most happy on vacation with his family, particularly in Ouray and Estes Park, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers: Everett Doyle Scarbrough, lost at sea in 1951; and Wesley Alden “Pete” Scarbrough, who passed two weeks before him in 2021.
Paul is survived by his wife, Esther Lou of Dallas, Texas; his son Mark Scarbrough and son-in-law Bruce Weinstein of Colebrook, Connecticut; his son Barry Scarbrough and daughter-in-law Jennifer Scarbrough, of Saint Charles, Missouri, as well as their two children and his treasured grandchildren, Bailey and Keaton.
