A Funeral Mass for Richard “Dick” W. LaVigne age 87, of Ogdensburg, NY, will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Notre Dame Church, with Rev. Joseph Morgan & Rev. Kevin O’Brien co-officiating. Calling hours will be held Friday, November 15, 2024, from 4 – 7 PM at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mr. LaVigne passed away at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center on Monday, November 11, 2024, with his loving family by his side.
Surviving Dick are his two sons, James (Michele) LaVigne of Auburndale, FL, and Andrew (Elizabeth) LaVigne of Arlington, VA; two daughters, Meg Anne (Timothy) Maze of Ranchester, WY, and Beth Anne (Joseph) Bresett of Ogdensburg; brother, Thomas (Sharon) LaVigne of Heuvelton; grandchildren Austin LaVigne, Christopher & Sarah Maze (Ian Zerbe), Kori (Drew) LaRose, and Madison & Rylee Bresett; great-grandchildren Parker & Grant LaRose. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also survive.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marguerite “Peggy” D. LaVigne in 2018; a son, Steven Richard LaVigne in 1993; brothers, Francis and James LaVigne; and a sister, Mary Ann LaVigne Marney.
Born on May 27, 1937, in Ogdensburg, NY, Dick was the son of the late Frank E. and Mary (Fraser) LaVigne. He graduated from St. Mary’s Academy as a member of the Class of 1955 and continued his education at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., where he graduated as a Civil Engineer. On January 31, 1959, he married the love of his life, Peggy Deserre, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg, NY. They celebrated 59 years of marriage together, enjoying their family, friends, and traveling the world.
On September 1, 1959, Dick proudly joined the United States Air Force, where he dedicated 27 years 9 months of service, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and earning numerous medals and decorations for his commitment and bravery. After enjoying a fulfilling career, Dick returned to Ogdensburg in 1986 to begin his retirement. As a devout Catholic, he was an avid churchgoer at Notre Dame, St. Mary’s, and later in life, St. Raphael’s in Heuvelton. Dick made lasting contributions to the Ogdensburg community.
An avid sports enthusiast, Dick loved participating in a variety of team sports, as well as fishing and golf. He found joy in flying, frequenting his favorite restaurants, and was especially proud to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events, where he cheered them on with enthusiasm.
Dick will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. His legacy of love, service, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
