Marlene H. Schermerhorn, age 93 of Hammond, died peacefully early in the morning of October 19, 2022. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery this fall. Services will be held privately for her family.
Marlene is survived by two daughters, Dawn Merna & her husband Bill of Ogdensburg, Polly Sergel of Macomb; two sons Ryan Schermerhorn & his wife Kari of Macomb and Clay Schermerhorn & his wife Nichole of Burnt Hills along with 13 grandchildren and several greatgrandchildren.
She is predeceased by her late husband, Paul, and two daughters, Nancy Brady and Cheryl Schermerhorn.
Marlene was born on March 1, 1929 in Hammond NY. She graduated from Hammond School and later married Paul W. Schermerhorn at the Hammond Presbyterian Church with Rev. Campbell officiating their marriage. She joined her young husband residing on a dairy farm in North Hammond that they would eventually purchase and operate together while raising a large family. In March of 2011, they renewed their wedding vows in honor of their 60th Anniversary.
Marlene worked at many jobs over her life. None were more challenging, but ultimately rewarding than the position of Matriarch. However, her accomplishments over her life are much more than this singular title. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She was a chef who always somehow found a way to feed any extra person that came to her table. She was an able business partner, working shoulder to shoulder with her husband on the farm. She could be found tending to the young stock or working in the fields, normally with the youngest of her brood in tow. She was a constant presence in the lives of her family.
Marlene is gone, but she will never be forgotten. She will be with us every day in the actions we take and words we speak.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, US Hwy 11, Potsdam, NY 13676. Condolences can also be shared online at www.foxandmurrayfuneralhome.com.
