Larry A. Simzer, 77, of Ogdensburg, NY, died on October 1, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since March following a motor vehicle accident. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Friday October 4, 2024 at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Smith officiating. Calling hours will also be held on Friday from 12:00pm until the time of the service. Interment will immediately follow at Flackville (Campbell) Cemetery in Lisbon.
Larry was born March 14, 1947 in Ogdensburg NY, a son of Alice P. (Smithers) and Henry Allen Simzer. He graduated from Lisbon Central School in 1966, and began an apprenticeship at Baildon’s as a machinist. Over the years, he worked for Standard Shade Roller until its closure in 1996, and continued his career at several other factories to include Michlet Plastic, Fisher Gauge, and ACCO. He also proudly operated his own business, "Lar’s Machine Shop", where his remarkable talent for fixing anything made him a trusted resource for many local farmers.
His first marriage to Martha Kelley ended in divorce, and he was later remarried to Dianna Hilborne in 1974, which also ended.
A passionate horseman, Larry rode until his late 60's, and was actively involved with the St. Lawrence Valley Horsemen’s Association and the National Barrel Horsemen’s Association. His love for barrel racing led him to victory in New York State in 2013, along with numerous high placements throughout his racing career.
Larry was a familiar face at the diners of St. Lawrence County, particularly known for rarely missing a Wednesday wing night at Doug’s Tavern, where he cherished the camaraderie of friends and regulars.
He is predeceased by his parents Alice and Henry Simzer; a sister Karen; and a brother Curtis.
Larry is survived by his special friend and companion Delberta Carr of Lisbon; daughters, Lori (Bruce) Lund of Colchester, CT, Patti (Dave) Murray of Ogdensburg, Terri Simzer (Jordan Backus) of Lisbon; and a son, Jason Davison of Lisbon. He is also survived by his sisters, Betty (Tony) Mehalick of Saranac Lake, Judy Simzer Smith of Mesa, AZ; a brother, Gene Simzer of Rochester, NY; as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
