Harriet Clark Hastings, 89, was called to eternal rest on July 17, 2017 following a brief illness and surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of the late George and Helen (Utter) Clark, Harriet was a lifelong resident of Ogdensburg. She was predeceased by her sisters Mildred Flavin and Jane Hobbs, her twin.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Monday, July 24 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Knox and Caroline Streets in Ogdensburg. A calling hour beginning at 10am in the church will precede the services. Friends and family are invited to attend a reception in the church hall following the funeral service. Burial will take place at a future date in Malone, NY at the Morningside Cemetery.
Harriet is survived by her husband of 67 years, Arthur C. (Art) Hastings and three daughters: Susan (Glen) Hastings-Bishop of Russellville, AR; Nancy (William) Stewart of North Greenbush, NY; and Mary (Anma) Hastings of Madison, WI. She is also survived by granddaughters Jennifer (David) Stewart Goldstein, Katherine Stewart, Ann Bishop and great-grandchildren Emma and Jonathan Goldstein.
A graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, she continued her education at the Wallace Secretarial School. In addition to raising their daughters with Art, Harriet worked at Western Condensing Company, Sperling Furniture Company and AAA. She retired in 1993 from the Ogdensburg Public Library where she served as acquisitions clerk. For many years she was an active member and leader in the Girls Scouts in Ogdensburg and, at St. John’s Church, a member of the Episcopal Women’s Group, Altar Guild and choir.
The family thanks the staff at Claxton-Hepburn Hospital and St. Joseph’s Home for their kind and tender care. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. John’s Memorial Fund, the St. John’s Food Pantry or the Ogdensburg Public Library Book Fund.
