A Mass of Christian Burial for Betty R. Smith, age 99 of Ogdensburg will be held at 2:00pm on Friday (Sept 6, 2024) at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Joseph Morgan officiating. Entombment will follow at the Oswegatchie Mausoleum.
Visitation will be held also on Friday from 11:00am to 1:30pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith passed away at her home on Sunday (Sept 1, 2024) surrounded by her loving family.
Surviving is her son Dr. Edward Smith and his wife Linda of Ogdensburg; two daughters Kendra Smith and her husband TJ Seguin of Massachusetts and Diane Stoeckle and her husband Michael of Plattsburgh; three grandchildren Tiernan Smith & his wife Christina, Andrea Smith & her husband Nicolas Bertrand and Edward Smith & his wife Katie; five great-grandchildren Parker Murray, Gannon Johnson, Bentley Dishaw, Elaine Smith and Isla Smith.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert; five sisters Jean Dunn, June Ploof, Luella Brouillette, Anne Slobadin and Pauline Smoral; and a brother Edward Rogers.
Betty was born on August 26, 1925 in Westville NY, a daughter of the late Edward & Elsie (Wilson) Rogers. She graduated from Franklin Academy High School in Malone, and continued her education at the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital School of Nursing. She later married Robert J. Smith on May 17, 1947 at St. Raphael’s Rectory with Msgr. Harold Martin officiating.
Betty was a registered nurse at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital until 1950. She later became employed at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home from 1961 – 1987 when she retired as their assistant director of nursing services.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish and the Hepburn Nurses Alumni Association. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and spending time with her family. Memorial donations can be made to the Claxton Hepburn Foundation, Ogdensburg Rescue or St. Joseph’s Nursing Home.
