She was born February 8, 1920 to Clinton Cleveland and Ollie Alice Shields Claxton in Walls, Oklahoma.
She retired from teaching in 1976. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Odessa since 1951.
After retiring, she volunteered at the West Texas Food Bank, the Odessa Senior Citizen Center, First United Methodist Church, and for the library at Gonzales Elementary. She won the Volunteers in Public Schools Outstanding Intergenerational Volunteer 2006-2007 Award for her work with Ector County I.S. D., as well as being awarded the W. D. Noel Celebration of Volunteers Award in 2008.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Walter O. Carey, brothers; Hardy Claxton and J.C. Claxton.
She is survived by daughters; Beth Garner and husband Ed, of Canyon Texas, Sandra Lynn McCorkle and husband Buddy of Brownwood, and 5 grandchildren; Laurie Hernandez, Kari Beth Henry, Thomas Garner, Bryan Hosch, and Eric McCorkle, and 4 great-grandchildren, Miyah Hernandez, Marissa Hernandez, Myka Hernandez, and Broden Henry.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2012 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Chapel with Terry Tamplin officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
