He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on November 28, 1930 to Jimmie Douglas (JD) Voss and Ruby Mae Hurt (née).
Raised in the depression era, he was brought up in various local areas in Oklahoma and Texas, graduating from high school in High Island, Texas and joining the Navy shortly after. Completing his first tour, he went to work in the oil fields of West Texas, and moved to Odessa. He met Dixie June Chester, and married her in 1950. He rejoined the Navy, and was stationed in California, Hawaii, and Texas. He was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War. During his career with the navy, he earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer, an accomplishment he took great pride in. Upon retiring from the navy, he settled in Odessa, Texas and worked for Tuboscope for the last 40 years. After the passing of Dixie, he met Shirley Skiles, and married her in 2004. Together they enjoyed weekly breakfasts with friends and family, working on handy-crafts, and church services. He was a 33rd degree Mason, accomplished electrical engineer, scout master, and reserve sheriffs’ officer. He loved hunting, camping, working on anything electronic, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his grandson, Jason Motes of Dallas, step-sons Jimmy Skiles and wife Debra of Odessa, John Skiles and wife Dianne of Odessa, Step-daughters Lee Ann Jackson and husband Ray, Devonne Thomas and husband Anthony, and granddaughter-in-law Angelica Motes of San Angelo, along with several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dixie, his daughter, Sherri Voss, grandson Jack L. Motes, and wife of 10 years, Shirley.
Services are scheduled for 3 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home.
