He was born November 5, 1925, in Odessa to Robert Dodge and Rosey (Cox) Hammett. A veteran of WWII, he was in the U.S. Navy for 3 ½ years and a member of Bethany Christian Church. He was a retired fire fighter with 25 years’ service from the City of Odessa and a ranch foreman of the Johnson’s Ranch for over 50 years. He was recently inducted into the International Santa Gertrudis Breeders Association Hall of Fame on April 20, 2013.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fannie Mae Hammett, a step-son Kenneth Dudley, a sister Inez Saunders, and his brother Floyd C. Hammett.
He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Horne and husband, Olin of Odessa, stepson Rodger W. Dudley of Independence, MO; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2013, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2013, at Bethany Christian Church with Rev. Clark Ford officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with a Honor Guard ceremony by the Odessa Fire Fighters.
Pallbearers will be Terry Hammett, Randy Horne, Mark Horne, Kenneth Dudley, Craig Dudley, and Rick Hammett. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Weiershausen, David Henry, Bill Lane, and Howard Rockafellow.
